3D Printing
3D printing creates many new and interesting opportunities for students to learn. 3D technology places the students in a position to make new things and create their own unique solutions to problems. With 3D printing, students become designers and makers and it also increases spatial reasoning skills. 3D printing technology is expensive, but is a great motivator for reluctant students. Students love to make things hands on. Using this technology, students can create solutions to real-world problems. 3D printing has applications across all subject areas from science and math to art.
3D printing has many applications to solve real-world problems. Students will be fascinated by their ability to solve real issues and help others. Recently, 3D printing techniques have helped children with a condition known as microphthalmia, where children are born with missing eyes. Doctors used MRI scanning on children with the condition, and then predicted how each child's head would develop. Using this information, the doctors created a custom implant for each child. The condition causes children to develop facial deformities when growing due to the missing eyes. These implants prevent developmental issues by replacing the eye shape so that the face can develop normally without facial deformities. Another example of the application of 3D printing is in the case of a puppy who was attacked by another dog. The puppy was severely injured, losing parts of her jaw and face. Doctors used 3D printing technology to create a custom "mask" that would hold her face together to ensure the best possible healing. This technique is used in treating other injuries in animals. 3D printing can also be used to create amazing works of art. Using digital tools, artists can create works of art and then print them, creating all sorts of unusual and functional 3D objects. Across subject areas, students can be motivated to learn through stories and real-world applications like these.
I would incorporate 3D printing in my classroom for students to learn to create 3D objects with digital 3D tools. After learning the software, students can print their own creations and have them in their hands. I would encourage other teachers to use 3D printing in their classroom. The ways students can engage and learn in the classroom is limited only to the imagination.
